Marvel Legends Series 3.75" Gamora

The deadliest woman in the galaxy, Gamora.

Gamora is another of my most wanted figures as this completes a core team of the Guardians of the Galaxy (GOTG). A minor downside is she's in her Marvel NOW costume, compared to the uniforms of the other GOTG members we got previously. She fits in quite well with them actually as you'll see later but you want the proper costumes from a certain period you know. The figure is all new. She's got a nice head sculpt. I like the hair which is slightly wind swept. Both eyes were well painted and they have the yellow around the eyes. Her lips were painted a nice metallic green. Her suit has lots of great sculpted detail. The overall look is let down by the paint apps which are a bit of a mess. There's splotching and bleeding in several places. My figure has loose hips which is annoying and she tends to fall forwards.

Just to show what they did with her elbow pads. They are sculpted on the forearm side. They look fine when she's standing straight and will stick out when the elbows are bent.

She comes with the Godslayer sword. It's made of very soft plastic. The grip is a bit stiffer thankfully. I like that they painted it. It looks pretty good.

She also comes with a gun. It looks like the same gun that came with Bishop and there's great detail on it. Without any paint it looks plasticky.

Articulation. She's got a ball joint neck, ball hinge shoulders, swivel hinge elbows, ball hips, double jointed knees and ankle hinge and pivot.

Comparison shots.

Nice figure! I would have preferred a different costume but I don't mind this. Thanks for viewing!

Marvel Legends Series 3.75" Living Laser

Here's a look at the Marvel Legends 3.75" Living Laser.

This figure is of Living Laser in his modern look. I'm not too familiar with what he is now. From what I read online, he's become a body of photons and it seems he has to concentrate to keep a human shape like you see below. He's got a unique head sculpt. It's shape similar to a thimble. I'm not sure if it's a helmet of some sort. The eyes and lines on his longish head were sculpted. There's some line work done around his eye which is accurate to his look and it helps them stand out better. The body reuses the Triton body with different lower legs. It was made of a vibrant, translucent purplish plastic which looks really cool. It's made to look even better with the very nice paint detail. I love the frosted white on his body. The lightning type lines were very well done and are clean and straight. His left ankle joint was poorly done. His foot faces too much to his left and cannot sit flat on the surface.

Articulation. He's got a ball joint neck, ball hinge shoulders, swivel hinge elbows, ball hips, double jointed knees and ankle hinge and pivot. It needs a bit of nudging but he can turn his head.

Comparison shots.

A cool figure! It's a nice addition to the villains. Thanks for viewing!

Marvel Legends Series 3.75" Rage & Vision

Two more figures from this wave of 3.75" Marvel Legends, Rage & Vision.

Rage is a character I'm not familiar with. The description on the back of the card makes him seem like the Hulk. He has the build of a strong guy no doubt about that. The body reuses majority of the Bishop body and with Thunderstrike's jacket. The difference is he has new sculpted gloves with studs. I like that the studs were painted. The same for the studs and buckle of his belt which is a separate piece. He wears a mask. The design on top and at the eye holes were sculpted while the "whiskers" at his cheeks were painted. The paint apps for his eyes, nose and mouth are good.

This Vision figure is the second version of the character who is a member of the Young Avengers. He looks good. Certainly taller and more proportionate than the figure we got in the Marvel Universe line. I would have preferred if we got the original Vision in original colours. There's hope for that seeing how Hasbro usually throws up repaints from time to time. The head sculpt is new. The gem on his forehead was sculpted which is a nice surprise. The eyes were well painted. The body uses the same body as Living Laser. The left ankle joint was done properly on this figure. The paint apps are good. The colours are clean and solid, and I like the gold they used. The cape is the same one that came with the previous figure, just gold in colour.

Articulation. Both Rage and Vision have a ball joint neck, ball hinge shoulders, swivel hinge elbows, ball hips, double jointed knees and ankle hinge and pivot.

Comparison shots.

Both are good looking figures. Good looking with insufficient articulation. Been a number of those for awhile now... Thanks for viewing!

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Southeast Asia Press Conference in Singapore

If you didn't already know, Team Cap consisting of Chris Evans (Steve Rogers / Captain America), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes / Winter Soldier), Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson / Falcon) and Director Joe Russo are in town to promote the latest instalment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That being Captain America: Civil War.  A press conference was held yesterday.

Moderated by Glenn Ong, we got to know a little more of what went on behind the scenes, more about the cast and their thoughts on various issues, including the no small matter of a competition between Team Cap and Team Iron-Man. Robert Downey Jr (Tony Stark / Iron-Man) and co. have been calling Team Cap out on social media, throwing down the gauntlet by having the Eiffel Tower lighted up in Iron-Man's colours. "We can do something special here in Singapore," Chris Evans replied on how he intends to respond.

(There will be a Lights and Fireworks show tonight, 22 April 2016 at 8.30pm at the Marina Bay Sands Outdoor Plaza. Don't miss it!)

So why should we watch Civil War? Joe Russo replies, "It's a culmination of films which has preceded it in the Marvel Universe and it brings all the characters together in a big family fight. The spectacle is enormous. The performances are exceptional. We have an incredible cast. It's heart breaking and a great deal of fun. You'll have a well rounded experience in the movies."

The actors were asked to describe the movie in with one word. Sebastian Stan says" heart-breaking", Chris Evans "record-setting", and Anthony Mackie suggests "ass-kicking". (I can agree with all of that.)

On what it was like going from staging paintball battles in Greendale Community College to putting together the giant battle in Civil War. Joe Russo describes it as being a fantastic journey and a dream come true for him.

On how they decided to pick which characters for which team. He joked that they flipped a coin. On a more serious note, the writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely went through the cast they had available and unavailable, and thought very hard about who would line-up against who based on their motivations up till this point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They looked for some surprising choices as they did not want it too predictable for the audience.

A question was asked if the actors prepared anything for press conferences and if they had any messages. Anthony Mackie took this one.  The short answer is "no". He says the reason they are on this tour together is to try and get to know the culture they are in and meet the people whereas Team Iron-Man are pampered and go from the press conference to the spa, and then to the jet. Team Cap learn more about the people, eating the food such as stingray and chilli crab and learning stuff like "Yes lah" and "No lah". Stuff like that is what they prepare for.

(Gotta love Anthony Mackie. He's such a fun guy. Here's another great bit from him.)

Falcon's costume is referred to as a bird costume in the film. So how would Falcon describe the look of Team of Iron-man. "Say that one more time for me homie." he tells the journalist in a fun way. (Captured the look below.) He then proceeds describing Team Iron-Man. Iron-Man is a coke can. War Machine a thrash can. Vision a big marker. Black Panther a car tyre. As for Black Widow, he says she's perfect. (Awww).

Who were their favourite onscreen heroes and villains of all time?  For Anthony it is the Michael Keaton Batman. Chris Evans says Michael Keaton's Beetlejuice. For Sebastian Stan it's Danny Devito's Penguin and Gary Oldman in The Professional. Joe Russo says Harry Fonda in Once Upon a Time in the West. More names were thrown up, even Michael Biehn in everything.

(This was one of the few time Sebastian Stan spoke. We should have thrown him more questions.)

The actors were asked what their workout regiment were like. Chris Evans responded that there is no special diet or special thing that they do. They just go to the gym pick up heavy stuff and put it back down again until they cannot do anymore and then they get big after some time. Anthony Mackie adds that Chris does ultimate frisby. Which he replies not really.

Chris Evans was asked which female comic book character would he pick to be a potential lover. He asked if Halle Berry counted. In comic books it follows a plot line whether there is a relationship to be had. With Captain America he feels he would look for something familiar. Like say he sees Sharon Carter as a reincarnation of Peggy Carter. In terms of the Marvel Cinematic Universes he feels that Captain America and Black Widow have established a nice platonic relationship so he would say Black Widow.

Asked on the importance of Captain America: Civil War to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Joe Russo replied that it is incredibly important. In The Winter Soldier we saw the dissolution of SHIELD and it changed the external structure of the Marvel Universe. He says this movie changes the psychology of the Marvel Universe in a significant way. The ramifications will carry over to Infinity War. It puts the characters in a complicated place. It is probably the most important Marvel movie today.

The press conference concluded with a photo shoot.

Captain America: Civil War opens 28 April 2016. Be sure to catch it!

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Blue Carpet Event Singapore

The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands witnessed what must be a record breaking turn out of fans who turned up to catch Team Cap at the Blue Carpet Event on the evening of 22 April 2016. Standing room was at a premium as fans crammed the area around the skating rink to await the stars from Captain America: Civil War. Some reportedly began arriving as early as 8am. The start time of the event was 6pm. You would think there would be space on the upper levels but oh no. I got there around 2pm and already found myself a considerable distance away on the street level.

The event was hosted by Stephanie Carrington and Glenn Ong and they did a good job in warming up the crowd while waiting for the arrival of Chris Evans (Steve Rogers/Captain America), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier), Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson/Falcon) and Director Joe Russo.

A cosplay competition was held to kck things off. We saw fourteen participants show off their costumes which are based on Marvel Movie Characters.

The winner was Kanchiel in an Iron-Man suit. One of the main judging criteria is how well you portray your character and he certainly played the part well. He even has some resemblance to Tony Stark.

It was then time for the main event. Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan and Joe Russo all came out from behind the stage, catching the fans and even the hosts by surprise.

Getting a selfie or an autograph is never a guarantee at these events, even if you had a good spot by skating rink or fortunate enough to have a ticket to access the VIP section located in the centre of the rink. The three stars did as best they could to reach as many fans as possible. Anthony Mackie and Joe Russo endeared themselves to the fans even more by climbing over the barriers to reach those behind the media area.

Anthony Mackie would later "fly" up the escalator to the upper level to the delight of the fans crammed there.

Amidst all of this Chris Evans finally made his appearance. I'm surprised the roof wasn't blown off by the screams and cheers from the crowd when his name was announced.

Not long after, the four stars took to the stage. They were then asked questions by some kids from the Marina Bay Sands Corporate Social Responsibility (MBSCSR) programme who were invited to the event. Among the charities in the programme are the Association for People with Special Needs and the Singapore Association for the Deaf.

Before the night ended Team Cap were presented with artwork by local artists. And also several works done by the kids from MBSCSR.

The event is one to remember. The crowd was amazing! It was certainly one of the best crowds ever for a "western content" event. With great stars come great crowds. While I would have liked to be on the floor with them I was still happy on my perch two floors up. Another time perhaps. Hopefully when Infinity War comes around and with the whole Avengers team.

You've seen the Blue Carpet Event as well as the Cosplay Competition. But there's lots more going on at the Captain America: Civil War Festival which is held at the Event Plaza at the Promenade, Marina Bay Sands. The event is organised by Reed Exhibitions. They are the ones who bring us the Singapore Toy Game and Comic Convention (STGCC) every year.

One of the highlights are the life-sized statues of Captain America and Iron-Man (above pic). These statues are presented by Hot Toys and can be found at the Action City booth. Photo Op!

Their 1/6 scale counterparts may be viewed at the booth as well. Several of which were just announced for release not long ago. It's great that we can view them in person so quickly. There's Captain America, Hawkeye and Ant-Man based on their appearance in Captain America: Civil War to name a few. There's also Scarlet Witch based on her appearance in Avengers: Age of Ultron. The figures are available for pre-order.

The Festival Exclusive figure is the Steve Rogers Cosbaby. It looks so cute!

There's lots more things to check out. Over at the Toys R Us booth we can get our first look at the upcoming Marvel Legends life-sized Captain America Shield. The shield has a 24" diameter. The one we'll be getting should we pre-order does not come autographed. Booooo! Lol.

Other items up for pre-order are the Marvel Legends Series 12" figures of Captain America and Iron-Man. Each figure will retail at SG$99.90. I checked with the staff and they said that they will be released around August or September.

The Marvel Legends Giant-Man BAF series as well as the War-Machine / Disco Iron-Man 2-pack are available at the booth. There are no Black Panthers in sight. Those looking for Nick Fury can try your luck.

Simply Toys has a booth there as well and you can find various Marvel items there from Monogram, Funko, Kotobukiya, eFX and Sideshow to name a few.

If you like your photo with a Captain America: Civil War background, you can have one taken and you can download it from the STGCC Facebook Festival Album. All you have to do is "LIKE" The STGCC Facebook Page.

Other activities include the Shooting Gallery and Laser Tag. A small fee is required to participate.

The last day of the Festival is tomorrow, 24 April 2016. If there's anything you're interested in you better hurry down!

Now for some pics from the TeamCap Lights & Fireworks Show held yesterday. This was TeamCap's response to Team Iron-Man where Robert Downey Jr had the Eiffel Tower lighted up in Iron-Man's colours.

TeamCap would start the show from the Helix Bridge. I stationed myself at the Youth Olympic Park for a wider view. As the fireworks started, shots of Captain America and flashing images of his shield were projected on the Art Science Museum as well as on MBS. There were also scenes from the Captain America: Civil War trailer. The fireworks were nice but it really should have had some music. Maybe there was and I couldn't hear it from where I was.

With regards to who did better, I think Team Iron-Man's stunt was better. TeamCap's felt more like a promotion for the movie, which of course is the objective. I felt that what we saw was not enough a response from the character's standpoint. I'm TeamCap but I have to hand this particular battle to Team Iron-Man.

Marvel Legends Series 6" War Machine (Captain America: Civil War) & Iron Man Mark 27 (Disco Armour) 2-Pack

Captain America: Civil War opens tomorrow! So hyped! Can't wait to watch it! Things are heating up in the toy aisles too. Cap is going to need all the help he can get as reinforcements for Team Iron Man have arrived. I saw the two pack at the Captain America Festival last week and I hear it's now available in some stores. Here's a look at War Machine and the Disco Armour Iron Man.

A quick look at the Iron Man Mark 27 first. The figure is a repaint of the Age of Ultron War Machine from the Hulkbuster BAF series. This armour's main ability is stealth. I'm not sure how that works with the bright orange and shiny dark blue colours. The Disco name is certainly appropriate for it. The paint apps are good for the most part. The edges where the orange meets the blue are a little rough and splotchy. I like how the white eyes contrast against the blue. I also like the white paint sprayed at the arc reactor. It gives the appearance of it being illuminated. He has a shoulder cannon. It's a gold tinge metal colour here. This figure looks good and has its appeal. I'm not sure if I should keep it though. I guess he can be used as part of an Armoury setup.

I think most of us will be buying this 2-pack for the War Machine figure. He looks good. He definitely has the size and bulk. The body is new and there's lots of great sculpted detail on it. One thing which bothers me though is the upper torso. I think it's a little too big and roundish and it kinda throws the whole look out of proportion. It also seems to be off-centred on my piece. He has guns sculpted on his forearm. I like what they did with the armour. I like the matte black. If you examine it closely you can make out tiny white sparklies. They make it look like metal. Nice! The paint apps are great. The metallic silver areas were all well done. The logos and the letterings were well done too. I'm not sure how I missed the red blemish at the arc reactor given the number of pieces I had to choose from.

I'm glad War Machine comes with several accessories. You expect him to be loaded with weapons. He's got a shoulder cannon, a shorter straight shoulder cannon, two machine guns, an inactive baton, an activated baton and an extra pair of interchangeable fists.

The main shoulder cannon goes on his left shoulder. It loosely fits in the slot but will still stay on if untouched. Once touched it will likely drop off. The cannon has a swivel and hinge and can be aimed at several different directions.

The two machine guns have some nice sculpted detail on them. They may be pegged to his legs or at his forearms. I personally prefer them at his legs as the slot for them are quite noticeable.

Another reason I prefer them at his legs is so he can draw them like guns. I think they can be used as handguns as they each have a hinge and a segment can be pulled down. The hinge does not allow the handle to go down far enough though. So in order to get him to point straight you have to adjust his arms.

The inactive baton may be stored on his right shoulder. It stays on very well. The baton when activated like you see in his hand looks to extend out and has red energy flowing through it. I like the detail and the paint apps on the activated baton. It looks a little too short to me and I would have liked it to be longer.

Then there's the short cannon piece. Or that's what I think it is. The only place it fits is on his left shoulder. I suppose it's a cannon for when he's flying. I used the inactive baton to double up as another cannon for him.

Articulation. The Disco armour Iron Man has a ball hinge neck, ball hinge shoulders, bicep swivel, double jointed elbows, swivel hinge wrists, ball joint torso, ball hips, thigh swivel, double jointed knees and ankle swivel and hinge. He can look up and down quite well. The shoulder armour have flexibility to allow him to raise his arms a bit but not fully. He cannot flex his hands outwards due to the armour on the back of his hands. The ankle joint is hardly usable due to the leg armour.

War Machine has a ball hinge neck, ball hinge shoulders, bicep swivel, double jointed elbows, swivel hinge wrists, ball joint torso, ball hips, thigh swivel, double jointed knees and dumbbell joint ankles. The shoulder pads are flexible and allow for a bit more arm articulation. He can look up a bit and look down well. He cannot flex his hands outwards due to the armour. The torso joint allows for rotation but little bend. He can lift his legs straight up a bit. If you want the legs to be raised more they have to be swung to the side in order to do so. By then he will look awkward. The ankles can only pivot. His feet cannot point downwards or up.

Comparison shots.

Both figures are nice. I like the size of this War Machine. The accessories too. I would have liked if the range of his articulation were better. Thanks for viewing!

Captain America: Civil War Review

$

0

I have watched Captain America: Civil War twice now and I have to say it's in my top 5 Marvel movies of all time. It is an emotion filled roller coaster ride. Here's my review of it.

After the Avengers' latest mission leads to yet more collateral damage, the governments of the world want to rein in the Avengers and install a system of accountability, which leads the Avengers to take sides. Steve Rogers / Captain America (Chris Evans) believes that they themselves should be responsible and free to choose their own course of action while Tony Stark / Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr) is in favour of being under the oversight of the United Nations (UN). Both sides make valid arguments and you really do not want to choose a side in this movie.

In the thick of it all is Bucky Barnes / the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) who is the spark that ignites the fuel, bringing things to a head. Steve naturally wants to protect his best friend while the rest of the world would like to see the former Hydra Operative dead. Including the Black Panther who is played superbly by Chadwick Boseman. In costume he is athletic, agile and fierce in combat. Outside of it he exudes a regal presence. A really great performance.

Not to be outdone is Tom Holland as Peter Parker / Spider-man who for me is the best on-screen Spider-man ever. They brought him back to his humble beginnings in this one. That is being a teen and being a bit of a handyman and a science whiz. The action he got was great and he gets a number of zingers in as you would expect. It is like he stepped right out of the comics. You will definitely enjoy his appearance. He is refreshing and is a stark contrast to, shall we say the older and more serious characters. I cannot wait to see him again in his own movie.

There is a main villain in the show and that is Helmut Zemo who is played by Daniel Bruhl. He is intelligent and manipulative, and is the one pulling the strings behind the scenes. He is not the main source of the conflict but he certainly contributes to it. He does enough to move the plot along. In my opinion he could have been used and handled better.

Captain America: Civil War is another great instalment for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though filled to the brim with superheroes each character gets a decent amount of screen time. There is a good mix of action and drama. The tone is serious but still has its fun moments. The first third of the film can be a little slow but that is so as to set the stage and build things up. It gets better once pass that. The action is good. The battle between the Avengers is the highlight. It is such a visual treat. The various powers and abilities are displayed fully. I cannot praise Directors Joe and Anthony Russo enough for that. Comic fans will be pleased to know that certain quotes and scenes from the comics are in this. Actions have consequences and this will shake things up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There are two end credits scene so do stay in your seats for that.

Star Wars Day 2016 (Singapore): May the 4th Be With You

Star Wars Day has come again. The event is celebrated on May 4th each year but it was held earlier to take advantage of the long weekend. This year is the third instalment of the event in Singapore and it is held at the OCBC Square outside Kallang Wave Mall at the Singapore Sports Hub. I dropped by early yesterday for a look. Today, 1 May 2016 (Sunday) is the last day.

By the time I reached the venue a good crowd had already showed up for the opening ceremony. Characters from the 501st Legion Singapore, Cathar Outpost Rebel Legion Singapore and Fightsaber marched in to kick things off. I always get goosebumps when the music plays and the characters come into view. I love seeing the whole group together.

Making his debut at the event was Luke Skywalker, based on his appearance in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (SWTFA). Herve Cotton is the man in the robes. Though SWFTA was screened at the end of last year, he could only put the costume together in April after seeing additional footage in the Blu-Ray / DVD release. Accuracy matters a great deal.

Here are a couple of other characters who were around yesterday morning. I didn't see Darth Vader. I would have liked to get a shot of him bringing Kylo Ren around, like a family outing. Lol. You have to hand it to all the guys in costume. As the event is outdoors and with the weather we've been having, I imagine it is very hot for them.

The highlight for me would have to be the toys display. Ranging from 1977 to the present, there was plenty to see.

One of the most interesting sections is the custom table. There were custom painted props, figures, vehicles, card backs and even a life-sized droid!

IG-88 here was built mainly of cardboard. It's very well painted and it even has moving parts and working electronics. Wow!

Check out the custom card backs done in the vintage style by Boyan Customs.

"Hi, I'm Matt. The new radar technician."

Several tables had merchandise for sale. Nothing for me these days as I'm streamlining. I'm focussed on the Black Series 6" and also Star Wars Rebels.

A lot of the work the above mentioned Star Wars groups in Singapore do is for charity. This year's charity is the Make A Wish Foundation and there were several ways in which you could contribute. Be it taking a photo at the photo booth with a card back backdrop, getting a portrait or fan-art done, purchasing badges, shirts and cookies.

This year's backdrop at the photo booth is different from last year's. I believe the picture is of the old National Stadium. And notice the Emporium price tag at the top and the "Kallang" brand at the bottom. Nice!

You can catch The Band of Doodlers "live". They will be working on a total of four pieces and once completed, the pieces will be auctioned off for charity on Sunday.

A toy photography display by Sunny Ang was set-up. He has a number of interesting and hilarious pieces. Some of which are available for sale and some of the proceeds will go to charity.

Sunny has also set-up a simple diorama where you can take a photo and enter it into a contest where you can stand a chance to win his Photo Book. Here's my attempt at it. I can't say I'm happy with it. I should have worked on it a bit more.

All this and I haven't come to Fightsaber yet who gave another great performance. The cast members were mostly new. It looks like recruitment is going well. The skit they put up had a couple of Sith searching for a Sith Holocron. It would be boring if they found it and went away isn't it. So they had to contend with other Sith and also, the Jedi.

Here's a pic of the Sith Holocron. It's a very nice custom piece. I hear it was made with assistance from the folks at Neo Tokyo Project.

Always a favourite is the Fightsaber Jedi Training Workshop where Younglings can learn some basic Jedi skills. This segment was better organised this year. You had to register your kids beforehand in order to participate.

I spent a couple of hours there and had fun viewing the displays and taking photos. The venue is spacious but hot. Once again hats off to the guys and girls in costume. I like taking photos of and with you. There was a SWTFA Panel which I didn't stay for. I wanted to check out another event. Hopefully there will be more panels and more activities.

The full photo gallery will be uploaded at a later time. Thanks for viewing! And May the 4th Be With You!

Star Wars Desert Mission 3.75" Captain Rex (Rebels)

Received just in time for Star Wars Day! Here's a look at the Star Wars Rebels Captain Rex.

The figure is based on Star Wars Rebels but the series it belongs to is the Star Wars Desert Mission Series. I'm glad that Hasbro is still putting figures out from Rebels.

Like with Ahsoka, I was happy to see Captain Rex appear in Rebels. The feels in that scene when the two were reunited. Love it. The figure looks amazing. The likeness is spot on. They did a great job with the head sculpt. There are wrinkles on his forehead and bags under his eyes. The beard and eyebrows were sculpted. Retirement seems to be good for him looking at his size. I wonder if that is his old armour he's wearing. How does it fit. Lol. There's good detail on his attire. The paint apps here are poor. You can see bleeding in several areas and the blue was quite sloppily done. There are yellowish stains on his boots. It's probably due to the desert planet he's been living on. Normally I would have liked if they took it one step further and do some black wash on his armour. It's too clean and white. But I think he looks better in this way and he fits in well with the other Rebels figures.

He comes with several accessories. There are two blaster pistols. They have some nice detail on them. The greyish colour of the plastic is not bad and they do not look plasticky. The blasters may be stored in the holsters at his thighs. They fit very securely.

He also comes with his old helmet. The paint apps on it are good. The lines and design are clean and straight. I especially like that they painted the "kill marks" on the sides of his helmet. I'm not too sure if they are "kill marks". I imagine he's killed many more if they are. The helmet fits well on his head.

Then there's this energy staff which is a piece you use to build a bigger weapon. It's sturdy and has a bit of paint detail on it. He can hold it well. He will fall if he extends his hand out so you'll need to lean him backwards. I think you are supposed to flick the yellow "energy missile" to shoot. I gave it a shot but it didn't budge. It's too well secured on the staff.

His articulation is the same as the other figures. There's a ball joint neck, peg shoulders and peg hips. He can look up well surprisingly. He cannot look down.

Just a comparison shot with his allies.

This is a great figure! A must for Star Wars Rebels fans! Thanks for viewing!

Star Wars Black Series 3.75" Captain Phasma

Revenge of the Fifth! Here's a look at the Black Series 3.75" Captain Phasma.

Anyone else disappointed with Captain Phasma in The Force Awakens. I thought she would be more of a bad-ass. What with her shiny armour and authoritative presence. In the end she was most to blame for the destruction of Starkiller Base. She should have put up more of a fight. I hope they have better things in store for her.

The figure looks great. The armour is shiny and does not come across as looking too plasticky. I think the sculpt is good. The body is all new. The legs look a little too thin but I think it's okay. She is a tall one after all. The paint apps are decent enough. The silver has gone onto the black in some areas. The cape was made of a soft, flexible material. It has good detail and is textured.

The cape is removable. She looks just as good without it. Hmmm I'm slightly tempted to troop build a squad of these. But I know I better not.

Accessories. She comes with her gold tinged blaster rifle. It's the same weapon that came with the Forest Mission figure. This one has more paint detail. There's a slot on her right leg where you can attach the rifle to if you want.

Articulation. She's got a ball joint neck, ball hinge shoulders, swivel hinge elbows, swivel and weapon hinge (up down) right wrist, swivel hinge left wrist, ball joint torso, ball hinge hips, swivel hinge knees and swivel hinge ankles. She can hardly look up or down. The torso joint allows rotation and some bend to the sides. She can hardly bend forwards. The elbows can almost bend 90 degrees. The knees fare poorer.

Comparison shots. I think the two Captain Phasmas make a nice couple.

A nice figure overall. Definitely prefer this over the Forest Mission version. Why can't they just release these more articulated versions in the first place... Thanks for viewing!

I dropped by Doujinma today for a bit. It was my first visit to the event and I must say it was quite an eye-opener. Doujinma or Doujin Market is where you can find all sorts of independent Artists and Creator items ranging from art books, bookmarks, posters, badges, keychains, stickers and so on. They are mainly based on Japanese content but you can find western content at the booths as well. The event, organised by the Neo Tokyo Project has been going on for a couple of years now. It is usually held at SCAPE. But judging by the crowd I can see the need for the change in venue. This year's edition is being held at the Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre Level 2, The Crescent. It is on until 8 May 2016, which is tomorrow. Here are a few pics from today.

There are talks and seminars going on as well. If you are an aspiring artists you may want to check out the schedule below to see if there is anything of interest. And if you have a portfolio of your work you can bring it down and have them looked at.

For more information and details. you can check out the Doujinma site here. Tomorrow is the last day!

Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) 2016 Singapore

Yesterday was Free Comic Book Day (FCBD). Which might explain why my legs are aching... I must be getting too old for this...

My first stop was Books Kinokuniya Main Store at Takashimaya. I reached at around 8.45am and already there was a queue of about thirty odd. The staff were early too and they were handing out queue tickets and bottled water. You have to be member to get a ticket. The queue system was the same as last year's. Once you got a queue ticket, you were guaranteed a pack of free comics. A promotional flyer to purchase a pastry and a hot drink at a discounted price at Paul's Bakery was given out as well. That's very thoughtful of them! I observed many taking the opportunity to grab a bite.

You don't want to be away too long though as the crowd will reform quickly. And it might take you another 10 minutes or so before you can pick up your comics.

I was anxious to get things done early this time round as I wanted to get to GnB Comics early.

Why, you might be wondering. That is because it was the last time FCBD would be held at its present location and I didn't want to miss a thing. They did not reveal all the details prior to the event and you get the feeling it would be something special. They didn't disappoint.

In addition to the comics, Star Wars tote bags, posters, folders and mousepads were given out to both members and the public. How great is that!

At the members event inside the toys were heavily discounted. Some DC Collectibles singles figures were at SGD15 to SGD20 a piece. Various boxsets were at SGD35 to SGD50 a piece. Several Marvel Select figures were at SGD20 to SGD30 a piece. Fantastic! I wish I hadn't purchased some initially.

On the comics front you could pick up 20 back issues for just SGD5! Graphic novels were priced at the exchange rate of USD1 to SGD1 and if you bought five you got one free!

No wonder the cashier was kept busy!

I made my purchases and went to check out Doujinma for a bit. It was then back to Kinokuniya to catch Andie Tong do a "live" drawing demo. I missed the first part of so I don't know what tips he might have shared. With regards to shadows he advises to experiment. You can also try looking in the mirror with different light sources to help. He also spoke of some of the artists he looks up to and his study of European art.

An autograph session followed. If you purchased any of his books or work, you could get a free print. He also did sketches for a good number of people.

It was then time for an appearance by the 501st Legion Singapore. Like I said before I love seeing these guys.

I had a great time going from place to place. I only visited the two places mentioned above. But I would like to thank all the stores who participated in FCBD!

Marvel Legends Series Walgreens Exclusive 6" Namor

Here's a look at the Marvel Legends Series 6" Namor. He came as a surprise for me when he was revealed. With what's been going on regarding the Fantastic Four (FF) and related properties involving the movie studios, I didn't expect a new figure of him. Could this mean there's something up? I hope so. I would love to see the FF, Dr Doom, Silver Surfer, Galactus etc. back in the main Marvel Cinematic Universe. Anyway on to the review.

This figure is a Walgreens Exclusive. I had to ship this one in.

My first impression of Namor is that he's out of proportion, especially at the arms. They seem a little too big for him. The reason for that is the arms come from the medium sized character type such as Captain America (Red Onslaught series) and Whirlwind, and they attached it on a smaller sized torso. The upper legs too uses the medium sized character ones. The torso is all new. It has more of a streamlined shape compared to the Bucky Captain America body, which suits a swimmer's body just fine. The torso has good muscle definition and there's nice detail on his costume. The seams were sculpted, that is the V line and where the blue meets the black. I like that they used metallic blue. It definitely helps him stand out. The seams below his waist were just painted on. The collar is a separate piece stuck on. They did a great job with the "scale" pattern. They were very well painted. There's hardly any blemishes. He's got a great head sculpt. The shape and likeness is good. He's got the pointy ears. The eyes were poorly painted on my figure. It looks like someone tried to do some touch up work. I like the hair which has great sculpted detail and painted a shiny black. It makes it appears very slick.

Just to show you the wings at his feet. They were made of a soft, flexible type of plastic and have a nice sculpt. They are pegged and glued at his ankles. You know I have always wondered how he flies with those wings. They have to be working overtime.

Accessories. He comes with an extra pair of interchangeable flat open hands. They are "freestyle" swimming hands for when he's in the water. I like the detail on them. You can see the nails, veins and they also have some lines on them. I would have liked if he came with some fists as well.

He also comes with a trident. It's the same accessory that came with the Odin BAF figure. His is metallic gold and green in colour. It really is more of a spear. And it does not look like any trident he has used before that I can recall. The trident is a little too big for Namor to hold. While you can fit in his hand but you'll be stretching it a lot. I don't recommend him holding it for an extended period of time.

Articulation. He's got a ball hinge neck, ball hinge shoulders, bicep swivel, double jointed elbows, swivel hinge wrists, ab crunch, waist rotation, ball hips, thigh swivel, double jointed knees, calf swivel and ankle hinge and pivot. He can look up and down well. The ab crunch allows one click forwards and one click backwards. The ankle pivot can be used with little hindrance from the wings.

Comparison shots.

Namor is a great figure! The arms still bother me a bit but he looks okay from different angles. I don't like the trident. I'm going to have to find the old ones. I misplaced my accessory box... Thanks for viewing!

Marvel Legends Series 3.75" Defenders of Asgard Comic 2-Pack - Odinson & Thor (Jane Foster)

Here's a look at the Marvel 3.75" Defenders of Asgard Comic 2-pack.

I haven't been this excited for new Marvel Legends 3.75" figures for some time now. This Jane Foster Thor is the main reason why. She looks absolutely gorgeous. It's like she stepped right out of the comics. She's got a great head sculpt. There's nice detail on the helmet and the wings. The paint apps are good. They did the eyes and lips well. And I love the metallic paint used for her helmet and armour. The figure reuses a lot of the She-Hulk body. The torso the upper arms and legs are similar. I can't understand why they changed old forearm section which had wrist swivel and replaced it with ones with weirdly sculpted hands. They are bent inwards. It'll only look good when she raises Mjonir. The lower legs were newly sculpted. I like the strapping detail. The "wings" at her ankles are separate pieces, as is the belt and "skirt" section. There's great detail on the "skirt" piece. There's lots of fabric detail and it has a little texture to it. She wears a big flowy cape. I like the shape and size of it. It's not too heavy for her and it is flexible. It is maybe a little too long which affects posing. On the other hand it can help her to maintain certain poses.

Accessories. She comes with Mjonir which is the same one as the Secret Wars 2-pack Thor's. Hers has metallic paint for the head and also some black wash.

The other figure in the 2-pack is of Odinson. Get it? Odin son.... in other words Thor, the original one. His appearance is based on the time when he was a youth. Which may explain that big eyed, smug look, smiley face of his. Seriously what's with the head sculpt. It's a very odd look for him. He kinda looks like a Disney character Or maybe that's what they were going for. Anyway, the body looks good. It's a new large sized body. There's a nice bit of sculpted detail for his tunic. It's tied at the top. The wrist bands were painted on. There's great sculpted detail for his leg coverings and there's some dry brushing on them which is nice. The belt and sash is a separate piece. I like the big painted buckle. Attached on it is a strap to serve as his cup holder? Lol. I found that amusing. Look at the way it sticks out. It's actually so he can carry his weapon. He wears a short cape. It is torn and tattered in several areas. Draped on his shoulder is an animal pelt. It has furry detail on it and you can make out the legs. And it has some light greyish shading on it.

He comes with Jarnbjorn, the weapon he used at the time. There's nice strapping and wood grain detail for the handle. I like that they did the markings on the blade. As mentioned, he can carry Jarnbjorn in his "cup holder".

Articulation. Odinson has a ball joint neck, ball hinge shoulders, swivel hinge elbows, ball hips, double jointed knees and ankle hinge and pivot. He cannot look down or up. Head rotation is hindered by his hair and cape. There's not much bend at the elbows due to his big arms.

Thor has a ball hinge neck, ball hinge shoulders, bicep swivel, double jointed elbows, ball joint torso, ball hips, thigh swivel, double jointed knees and ankle hinge and pivot. She can look down okay but not up. Head rotation is restricted by her hair. Despite the good articulation there's not many poses she can do due to the pretty stiff "skirt" piece.

Comparison shots. Odinson looks similar to the Ages of Thunder Thor we got previously.

Thor (Jane Foster) is a great figure and highly recommended. Odinson would be better if not for the odd head sculpt. The body looks pretty good actually. I would have preferred if we got his bare chested look and with prosthetic arm. I think it goes along better with the Jane Foster Thor. Thanks for viewing!

Marvel Legends Series 3.75" Shield-Wielding Heroes Comic 2-Pack - Vance Astro & Captain America (Sam Wilson)

Another Marvel Legends Series 3.75" comic 2-pack. This time the Shield-Wielding Heroes in Vance Astro and the Sam Wilson Captain America.

The Sam Wilson Captain America is another figure I was looking forward to. Unlike with the Jane Foster Thor though, I'm not too happy with this figure. I already knew he was not coming with the wings so I was resigned to that. What I did not expect is that he is unable to equip his shield... I mean come on! That's now two essential components about the character that the figure doesn't have... The figure looks pretty good. The head sculpt is nice. I like the sculpted goggles and the detail of his hair. His face reminds me more of Samuel L. Jackson then Sam Wilson though. The body is new. There's a lot of sculpted detail on his costume. The arms and legs are similar to those from the Captain America: Civil War figure with the motorcycle. I think the arms are a little too big and too stiff looking. The paint apps are decent. There's just minor bleeding of the red on the white. I like the metallic paint used for his belt buckle and pouches, as well as on his knee pads.

Next up is Vance Astro. I'm not familiar with the character. I'm interested to know why and how he ended up with Captain America's shield. Wiki doesn't say much about it. Anyway the figure reuses the Living Laser's body. I'm not surprised he has the same problematic left ankle. The foot cannot sit flat on the surface and the ankle pivot is hindered. It's a pretty plain figure with some paint detail. His costume is a pearlescent white and dark navy blue. The paint apps are poor. The whole stretch of where the two colours meet have a lot of bleeding. The logo on his chest was done very well though.

Both figures come with a shield. It's the same shield which we've seen before with several previous Captain America figures. The clip on the inside is blue in colour here. As mentioned, Sam Wilson cannot equip it as the clip is too small for his wrist. I used sticky tac to stick it on in the pics below.

Articulation. He's got a ball joint neck, ball hinge shoulders, swivel hinge elbows, ball hips, double jointed knees and ankle hinge and pivot.

Cap has got a ball joint neck, ball hinge shoulders, swivel hinge elbows, waist rotation, ball hips, double jointed knees and ankle hinge and pivot.

I just stuck on Falcon's wings in the following pic.

Comparison shots. Sam Wilson looks a little too bulky for my liking.

This two-pack is a bit of a let down for me. Both figures are just okay. Thanks for viewing!

DC Comics XXRay Batman, Superman & Wonder Woman

The Trinity like you've never seen them before! These are the DC Comics XXRay figures by Jason Freeny, produced in collaboration with the team at Mighty Jaxx. Their main feature? You guessed it. Half of their body show what they look like on the inside. It's a little creepy but cool at the same time. Here's a closer look at them.

Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman are part of the first wave which was released earlier this year.

The figures come in clear windowed boxes. On one side of the packaging you have their respective logos.

On another you have X-ray images of them which is cool and fitting. Just put a light behind and the images will pop. I didn't have a proper light but you get the idea. You have to remove the figures first.

The figures are based on their appearances in the New 52. The costumes are not my preferred ones but I must say they did a great job with these. There's good detail. Batman here for example has the armour details, belt and pouches, and the logo all sculpted. Very nice! I also like the youthful appearance they gave the superheroes. The skeletal side has a "cartoony" look which is fine. I wouldn't want it to be realistic. You can make out the organs such as the lungs and intestines within the skeleton. The figures stand around 4" tall and do not have any articulation.

Wonder Woman is the sole female in the line so far. Her structure is smaller compared to the male figures. She has smaller feet. That along with being top heavy I think makes her lean forward which is of a little concern. I wouldn't want her to topple over. The vinyl material used feels solid enough so hopefully that will not happen. I have had enough of figures falling. (*shakes head at Justice League Unlimited.) I like the metallic paint used. She shines among the three. I also like she's carrying her Lasso of Truth.

Did Superman heat vision away half of his body or is he using his X-Ray vision with one eye? You decide. Lol. Again there's good detail on the costume. The S on the back of his cape was well painted. The skeletal side looks similar to Batman's. Batman's skeleton though is of a darker tone, possibly due to age.

These are certainly unique figures. They look pretty good, especially when you have a bunch of them together. There are other Justice League members available such as Green Lantern and Cyborg. Those in Singapore you can look out for them at Action City stores. For those overseas you can check the XXRay site for more info and availability.

Mafex Nanatsu no Taizai (The Seven Deadly Sins) Meliodas

Here's a look at the Dragon's Sin of Wrath, Meliodas by Mafex.

I got ahead of myself with this one. I liked the anime and was eager to pre-order the figures. I assumed that Meliodas would be in a similar scale as with Spider-man and Darth Vader. It turns out he is bigger and cannot be used suitably with the other anime figures that I have. I really should have looked at the product description more closely. It's a shame as Meliodas looks good. They captured his likeness well. I like the cheerful, cheeky expression on his default head. He's dressed in the attire we see him for much of the series. He wears a shirt, a vest and a tie loosely hung around his neck. There's nice detail. You can see the wrinkles and seams on his clothes. The vest piece is soft and flexible and allows for leg articulation.

Scale issues are not the only problem. His body is poorly constructed. It's made up of two separate pieces underneath the vest piece. They are attached to each other with ball joints, which make for great torso articulation if they were not restricted. The joints do not attach well and will easily drop out when you try to pose the figure.

He comes with a number of accessories. There are two additional heads (one angry and the other shouting expression), five extra pairs of interchangeable hands (fists, groping, gripping, wide grip, and two-finger pointing), broken Dragon Blade with sheath, Liz's sword and sheath, a mug of beer and a base and stand. Despite all this I feel they should have included two more parts. And that is a head with the black mark and an extra arm with torn sleeves and dragon tattoo.

The Dragon Blade handle was very well sculpted and has great detail. The melon shaped bag on the sheath has sculpted zips on it and is textured. The attached strap too has textured detail. Very nice!

Liz's sword and sheath is just as detailed. The design on the sword looks a little off centred to me. His grip of the sword is a little loose in his gripping hands.

The mug of beer will be a useful accessory. The exterior has the wood grain pattern and the metal bands and rivets sculpted. He cannot actually hold the mug of beer to lips due to limitations of is arm articulation.

Perhaps the best accessory, or I should say pack-in is Hawk, his faithful talking pig companion. He's big and round, and looks so cute. And pink! His tongue is showing and his expression is like he's in mid-conversation, or half eating. Someone needs to finish off all the food scrap! The clover mark was well painted on. He's also got his "Star Boar" earring with the words very well printed on. I'm a little concerned the ring attachment will rust over time. Hawk does not have any articulation.

I really love that Meliodas is able to sit on Hawk. But this also shows that Hawk is not big enough. If I'm not wrong, Hawk should be able to carry Meliodas wholly on his back.

Articulation. Meliodas has a ball joint neck, ball hinge shoulders, elbow hinge, revolver type wrists (Revoltech type joints), ball joint upper torso, ball joint at the ab area, ball hips on a hinge, knee hinge and revolver joint ankles. He can look up and down decently. The torso joints are restricted by the vest piece. The ankles can pivot but they are restricted by his boots. The ankle joints on my figure are loose and I had some difficulty posing him.

Comparison shots. Like I said before, it;s a shame he's so big.

The Marvel Select Dr Strange is around 7" in height and I think it's still not tall enough for Meliodas to be in scale. Imagine how big Diane would have to be.

The figure looks great and has a number of accessories. The downside is his size and poorly constructed body. The best thing for me is Hawk-chan. I can think of a couple of uses for him. In scenes that is. I'll say get this only if you like the characters. Hopefully Mafex or some other company makes this in a better scale. Thanks for viewing!
