Marvel Legends Series Dr Strange, Brother Voodoo, Enchantress & Dormammu BAF

I'm not sure what's up with me the past few days. I just feel so exhausted. I practically slept the whole weekend. And I had intended to get some photos done too... I did manage some. And it's a quick look at the rest of the figures from the Marvel Legends Dormammu BAF series. They are Dr Strange, Brother Voodoo, Enchantress and Dormammu himself.

These figures are basically the exact same figures that came out previously with some paint differences. They are good for those who missed out on them. For me they are quite disappointing to see. Especially so for Enchantress who was only just released in the SDCC Raft boxset. It's too soon.

I'll just be doing comparison shots in this post. For a more detailed look at the figures, follow the links:

Dormammu
Dr Strange
Enchantress

This version of Dr Strange (right) comes with different forearms. His gloves were painted on compared to the sculpted ones on the Hulkbuster series Dr Strange. The design on his costume has changed a bit at the chest area. This is for the time that he got back the title of Sorcerer Supreme. The red used is of a brighter tone, as is the yellow of his sash.

He comes with his cloak. (right)  There's some nice detail on it. The shape is nice and the design on the gold edges were sculpted. It's got the Eye of Agamotto pinned in the front. I've been using the Marvel Select cape on the Hulkbuster series Dr Strange.

Another difference is there's less grey in his hair on this version. His skin colour too was painted with a more richer skin tone.

Brother Voodoo has several differences compared to the SDCC version. This figure (right) is based on when he wasn't the Sorcerer Supreme. Hence there's less paint on his face, wears a tattered cape and carries a blue staff. His sash is of a different tone and his wrists bracers are of a darker tone.

The back view. This cape looks to be similar to Hobgoblin's.

And here you can better see his face. The white applied on his hair on this version is quite thick and some has gone onto his forehead on my figure.

I don't find this version of Enchantress (right) as appealing as the SDCC version due to the colour combination. I don't like her dark green attire which I feel doesn't go along well with her metallic green coloured arm sleeves. The circular patterns on her leggings were painted with metallic green too. Her belt is metallic yellow here. Her hair is of a darker shade of yellow. She comes with two hex effects and they are of a lighter shade of green.

The Dormammu BAF. Here's the parts list:

Head - Astral Plane Dr Strange (movie)
Shoulder Armour - Iron Fist
Upper torso - Enchantress
Right arm - Dr Strange (comic)
Left arm - Brother Voodoo
Lower torso and skirt piece - Nico Minoru
Right leg and flaming skulls - Karl Mordo
Left leg - Dr Strange (movie)

The case of figures that I ordered contained two right arms... Karl Mordo is supposed to have the left arm but it came with a right... it sucks... but it makes the decision to move it on easier.

I did not assemble the figure but you can still see the differences. The BAF has yellowish flames on his head, shiny purple armour and arms and legs, metallic red sections as compared to matte with black wash and has blue green flaming skulls compared to pink and purple. Even if complete, I'll still pick the SDCC version over the BAF for the colour of the skulls and the translucent hands which I think are cool.

The Dormammu BAF series is mixed bag. Iron Fist, Nico Minoru and the movie Dr Strange and Karl Mordo are nice. The rest to me are meh. I'll still keep the comic Dr Strange and Brother Voodoo just in case for certain set ups. Thanks for viewing!

Marvel Legends Series Wonder Man (Energized Emissaries)

Continuing where I left off from the Abomination BAF series. Here's a look at the Marvel Legends Wonder Man.

Wonder Man is a figure which needed an update. He looks much better now compared with the Toy Biz version. I would have preferred him to be in his safari jacket attire though. The figure largely reuses the "wolf" Captain America from the Red Onslaught BAF series. I believe the forearms are new. I can't recall anyone else having this particular set of sculpted braces. The paint apps are good. The logo and the red bands around his arms and legs are clean and straight. He's got a great sculpt. He wears a pretty serious expression, especially when you look straight into his red eyes. His hair is short and has good detail. I like that is has some blue highlights in it.

Accessories. He comes with a pair of Ionic fists and a pair of Ionic effect parts. The included BAF part is the right leg of Abomination.

Articulation. He's got a ball hinge neck, ball hinge shoulders, bicep swivel, double jointed elbows, swivel hinge wrists, ab crunch, waist rotation, ball hips, thigh swivel, double jointed knees, calf swivel and ankle hinge and pivot.

Comparison shots.

Nice figure. It's not my favourite look but it's better than the Toy Biz version. Thanks for viewing!

Marvel Legends Series Iron Skull & Eel (Abomination BAF Series)

Rounding out the Abomination BAF series, here are Iron Skull and Eel.

Iron Skull I think is based on his appearance in the Avengers Assemble cartoon. A quick Google confirms it. I would rather we got another character. Or at least got a larger suit for this. He has quite a bulky look in the show. This looks on the scrawny side. The figure reuses the Iron Man Mark 42 body and the head from the Red Skull from the Mandroid BAF series. The whole suit was made out of black plastic. The red line-work was well done. As is the skull faced logo on the arc reactor. The head looks very nice thanks to some great paint apps. The head is of a dark red tone. The eyes were very well painted. What I like best is the shading and black wash which really brings out the sculpt.

It's amazing what some paint can do.

Accessories. He comes with an interchangeable helmeted head. The helmet like the body is a repaint of the Iron Man Mark 42. The paint apps are good. The design is kinda badass. He also comes with the left leg of Abomination.

Eel is a character I'm not familiar with. According to Wiki there are two characters who used the name Eel. Based on the design of the costume this looks to be the second version, that is Edward Lavell. He's one of those henchman type villains and his main ability is to fire electric bolts, like an electric eel. Hence the name. The figure is on the the Bucky Captain America body. I did not realise it at first but through conversation with some toy collectors I found out that the figure is actually a repaint of Blizzard. The hands are from Electro from the Space Venom BAF series. The design of his costume was well painted.

Accessories. Eel comes with an extra pair of fists. Electro really should have came with a pair as well... The included BAF part is the torso of Abomination.

Articulation. Iron Skull has got a ball hinge neck, ball hinge shoulders, bicep swivel, double jointed elbows, swivel hinge wrists, ball joint torso, ball hips, thigh swivel, double jointed knees and ankle hinge and pivot.

Eel has got a ball hinge neck, ball hinge shoulders, bicep swivel, double jointed elbows, swivel hinge wrists, ab crunch, waist rotation, ball hips, thigh swivel, double jointed knees, calf swivel and ankle hinge and pivot.

Comparison shots.

Both figures are okay. Thanks for viewing!

S.H.Figuarts Ant-Man (Captain America: Civil War)

Here's a look at the S.H.Figuarts Ant-Man.

A figure which I've been eyeing since it was revealed, Ant-Man based on his appearance in Captain America: Civil War. He looks great! I really love the sculpt of the helmet and the metallic paint used. There looks to be a thin piece of of translucent plastic covering the eye holes of the plastic. They give the appearance of actual lenses. Very nice! There's great detail on his suit. The red areas and the inside forearm area are textured. Wrinkles can be seen at his shoulders, back of his arms and at the back of his legs. The front of the suit looks a little stiff and could maybe use some wrinkles. I'm just being nitpicky there. I do have issues with the figure. First, his head falls off easily at the lower neck joint which is very annoying when you're trying to pose the figure. The other thing are the "shoulder pads". He's not supposed to have them. And to make things worse they are on hinges which make them more noticeable, especially when arm articulation is in use.

Accessories. He comes with a pair of open hands. I love the seams and wrinkles on the insides of his leather like gloves.

He also comes with a miniature version of himself. (pictured on the right in the following pic). It's even smaller than the one that came with the Hasbro Ant-Man.

He's got great articulation. He's got a ball joint on the upper and lower neck, dumbbell joint shoulders with a hinge on the outer ball, bicep swivel, double jointed elbows, revolver joint wrists, ball joint torso, ball joint waist, ball joint hips on a hinge, some thigh swivel, double jointed knees, ankle hinge and pivot, and toe hinge. The "shoulder pads" have hinges as well.

Comparison shots.

Great figure! I have some issues with it but the good outweighs the bad. Thanks for viewing!

Here is something really cool! The custom made mini-arcade machines by NAJ Arcade. Check out the lovely wood pattern on the casing. Gorgeous. The mini-arcade contains several retro games such as Pac-Man, Mario, and Donkey Kong just to name a few. I got to try it out at a preview and I enjoyed playing the games. It really takes you back. The screen I feel is of a sufficient size and there is enough space on the console to use the controls comfortably. And if you like more games you can even add them in yourself. Lots of people have a PS4 or an Xbox but how many can say they have a mini retro arcade system.

A limited number of the mini-arcade machines will be available for sale at GameStart 2016. If you like you can support them at Indiegogo. More details in the link as well.

The folks at Kinetiquettes will have on display their fully painted statue of Alyse 3.0. Alyse is GameStart's mascot and shown below is a prototype of her. Her costume has changed again. She now spots a more combat ready look with light protective gear and padding. Her guns have got an upgrade too. Check it out as well as the Devil May Cry Dante and Vergil statues, and the M.Bision Psycho Power Edition levitating statue at their booth.

The main stage will host a varied array of content, including a Dungeons & Dragons session run by notable Singaporean indie developers, a panel on the gaming ecosystem in Singapore, music performances, live drawing demos and the Game On! GameStart Cosplay Runway 2016.

Do head down early as the first 300 visitors each day will receive a goodie bag with random loot inside which could include gaming tees and merchandise, or products from sponsors Seagate, Razer, Armaggeddon, MSI, Ingram Micro Asia and more!

Star Wars: "Rogue" Friday (Singapore)

I just got back from "Rogue" Friday! This year's Force Friday event was held just a few hours ago at the Toys"R"Us store at Suntec City Mall and I'm happy to report that I got what I wanted.

I was actually thinking of skipping the event to be honest. I didn't feel like spending a couple of hours in queue but yet I found myself there. And pretty early at that. There's just something about being at a product launch which fills you with excitement. I met a couple of other collectors there and had a nice chat with them which helped passed the time.

The crowd wasn't as big as last year but it was still a good sized one. More joined the queue as it got closer to midnight. I estimate near two hundred people showed up for the launch.

It wouldn't be a Star Wars event if there wasn't some characters in attendance. I'm grateful for the members of the 501st Legion Singapore who showed up. And on a work night even.

There was even a Death Trooper... oh wait... that's just a standee...

We were let in at the stroke of midnight. It was pretty hectic at the start as most of the Rogue One merchandise was put out in a corner at the front of the store. I felt that the area was not big enough. I managed to get what I wanted and exited quickly.

Here's a quick look at some of the merchandise available. Click images to enlarge.

The Force FX Lightsabers and Stormtrooper helmet could be found behind the cashiers.

If you spent $120 and above you could get a Star Wars tote bag containing some merchandise. The contents include a Star Wars LEGO poster, a Star Wars LEGO sticker sheet, a BladeBuilders Lightsaber, a notebook, a lanyard and a $10 Gift Certificate.

And here's my haul. Only the first wave was available which is kinda disappointing. I was hoping to get Director Krennic. Reviews hopefully will be up this weekend.... I have some things to attend to the next few days...

Those who are hunting for the new figures you may want to head down to the Suntec City atrium. I saw some staff stocking as I was leaving.

A mini-stage has also been set up. I'll try and head back during the weekend to check things out if I can.

Right it's about time I went to bed. Thanks for viewing!

Star Wars: Go Rogue at Suntec

Just some pics from the Star Wars: Go Rogue event on Saturday at the East Atrium at Suntec City.

Always a crowd favourite, appearances by the 501st Legion Singapore and FightSaber. Unfortunately there are no further scheduled appearances for the event.

There's lots and lots of Star Wars merchandise.

The stock of Rogue One figures still seems healthy. No Black Series 6" Death Troopers to be found though.

From the LEGO and Hasbro 3.75" displays.

There are also Star Wars Kotobukiya statues available from Simply Toys. And not forgetting Star Wars Funko POP! figures.

The following are some Star Wars merchandise available from Simply Zakka.

The event is on till 16 October 2016 if you like to check it out. Thanks for viewing!

Star Wars Black Series 6" K-2SO (Rogue One)

Here's a look at the Star Wars The Black Series 6" K-2SO.

From the description on the back of the package, "K-2SO is a reprogrammed Imperial security droid now loyal to the Alliance. It is an alarming sight standing within a secret Rebel base. The pragmatic droid is an effective insertion agent as he can blend in perfectly at Imperial installations and outposts."

K-2SO was the figure I most wanted on "Rogue" Friday. And he didn't disappoint. He is fun to fiddle with and he looks really cool! He's tall, imposing, and I like the black tone he's got. He kinda reminds me of the Medical Droid but based on what we know so far I think the only operations he'll be doing is assaulting. I love the contrast of his white eyes against his dark exterior. There's a bit of an eerie look about him and they give the impression that he is presently functioning. There's lots of great sculpted detail on him. You can make out a number of panels, vents and mechanical parts. The paint apps are great and he was made to look worn and battle damaged. There are several areas with paint scrapes on his body. There are Imperial logos on his shoulders and they too were roughly done, further giving the impression of him being worn. An interesting thing about him are the elbow and knee joints. If you view them from the side you'll notice it's translucent in the middle. I took another look at the trailers and noticed those joints are like a ring, that is you can see through the middle of it. I think Hasbro did a good job in trying to make it more accurate. The way those joints were attached though is weak. It's quite noticeable at the knees joints where they look like they're going to buckle in some of the pics. It's because of this he can't hold certain poses for long and has some trouble standing.

A close up of the head. I love that they applied some silver at his "cheeks". It helps bring out some of the sculpt and make him less dull. There's also some silver applied on the interior of the neck slot. Very nice!

Just to show you the sculpted detail at his mid-section.

He's got great articulation. He's got a dumbbell joint neck, ball hinge shoulders, elbow hinge, swivel above and below the elbow hinge, swivel hinge wrists, ball joint torso, ball hips, knee hinge, swivel above and below the knee hinge and vertical and lateral ankle hinge. Head articulation is excellent, he can look up and down very well. He cannot bend forward much, he can however bend backwards decently. The elbow, knee and ankle hinges are bidirectional, allowing for some fun poses.

Comparison shots. K-2SO is tall, but not as tall as Chewbacca.

Great figure! I had a lot of fun fiddling with him. I can't wait to see him in action on the big screen. Thanks for viewing!

GameStart 2016 Game Feature: Slashy Hero by The Gentlebros

$

0

Slashy Hero is an isometric dungeon crawler game developed by The Gentlebros, a Singapore based company. The game was actually released last year in October and it is coming up on its First Anniversary. I only got to know of the game during the GameStart 2016 Press Conference last week. Intrigued, I downloaded it and I've been enjoying it so far.

Slashy Hero is very much a Halloween themed game. The story revolves around an evil mansion which has stolen all the sweets. Without the sweets Halloween will be ruined! Not if our hero (you) has got anything to say about it. There are currently 87 levels to get through. You will have to slash your way through various enemies, negotiate obstacles, defeat bosses and the most important of all, collect candy.

The gameplay is simple. You move around by holding the spot where you like your hero to move. Alternatively you can draw a line from your hero to where you want him to go. This is actually how you attack the various ghosts and monsters. You have to draw your line through them, at times repeatedly if they have high health and our hero will slash through them. Your attack range is limited. Note the blue bar in the following pic. You can only move/attack as far as it allows. Also you are not restricted to straight lines. You can have him turn and move in circles if you desire.

Things start out easy at first but get more hectic as you progress. Do plan where your hero ends up at the end of the line you draw. You do not want him to land up in a group of enemies. The key is to keep slashing so as to not allow the enemies a chance to hit you.

Obstacles can cause great damage. But you know what, those same obstacles can also be used to your advantage as they cause damage to the enemy as well.

Enemies drop candy once you have killed them and it is necessary to collect as much as you can so as to use it to increase your stats.

Increasing your stats will make things a little easier and help with the boss encounters which can be quite tough.

Not to worry if you die in game as certain levels are checkpoints where you can restart from. You can also revive on the level you died by using gems. But those are hard to come by and I prefer to keep them till I seriously want to use them. You could purchase more gems with real currency if you like.

Some levels have secret areas so it is a good idea to look out for candy hovering in the black spaces. You can also sometimes find items there.

Speaking of which I have not mentioned the collectable costume parts and equipment which enemies sometimes drop or found in chests. You can equip the items on your hero to change his appearance. Certain items can increase your stats as well. There are currently 102 items to collect. As you can see, I have a long way to go. All the more reason to keep playing to find them.

For a different challenge there is a special level accessible through the Infinite portal you see on the right in the following pic. In it you have to slash through wave after wave of enemies. It can get very intense! A good thing about this level is you can collect candy and items from here as well.

Slashy Hero is a fun, simple game. The game is easy to get a hang of and the visuals are attractive and cute. Slashy Hero is available on iOS and on Android, and will soon be available for PC. Check it out at The Gentlebros booth (Booth A3) at GameStart 2016! See you there!

Star Wars Black Series 6" Sergeant Jyn Erso (Jedha)

Here's a look at the Star Wars Black Series 6" Jyn Erso.

I knew I should not have bought Jyn Erso. A day after I bought her she was announced to be released again in a Target exclusive 3-pack together with Cassian Andor and a Death Trooper... And that pack looks very attractive. Oh well... Jyn Erso is the main protagonist in Rogue One. The figure is of her based on her appearance on Jedha. Out of the package she is wearing a scarf which has been wrapped into a hoodie. The scarf was made of vinyl and is soft and flexible. It fits her head well without looking oversized and there's nice sculpted detail on it. There are folds and wrinkles in it. The scarf is removable. It just takes some fiddling.

Here she is without her scarf. I think the head sculpt is okay. She could use some different paint apps. She comes across as "green" and fresh faced, not an experienced rebel that she is portrayed as in the trailer. The hair has good detail and I like that there is some dark brown shading in it. Her neck was painted and it is of a different skin tone compared with her face. It's not really a big deal. It's noticeable on close inspection though. Her attire is nice! There's lots of great sculpted detail on it. The brown portion of her jacket has a horizontal lines pattern on it in the front and has zips. I especially like the padded look of it on the back. Her sleeves have wrinkles and have a sculpted yellow strip running down the sides which is textured. Her pants are also textured and you can make out the seams and wrinkles. Her belt and holster is a separate piece and it too is textured. I like the paint detail they did. It makes a big difference. The zips and buckles of her jacket were painted, as were the studs on her belt and buckles on her shoes. Nice!

The "vest" portion of the jacket can be removed. Her arms are jacket sleeves though and do not go along with her grey inner shirt.

Accessories. In addition to her scarf, she comes with a blaster pistol. There's nice sculpted detail on it and I like that some silver paint was applied on it. The pistol may be stored in the holster at her right thigh.

Articulation. She's got a peg hinge neck, ball hinge shoulders, swivel hinge elbows, up and down right wrist hinge and swivel, swivel hinge left wrist, ball joint torso, ball hips, thigh swivel, double jointed knees, boot swivel and ankle hinge and pivot. The peg joint for the neck is disappointing. It really should have been a on ball joint. Her head will be slanted when she turns her head while looking up or down. On the plus side, she can look up and down well. The torso joint does not allow much bend forwards and backwards.

Comparison shots.

Jyn Erso is a good figure. If you haven't bought it yet, don't. I recommend waiting for the 3-pack. Thanks for viewing!

GameStart 2016: Indie Games Feature

$

GameStart 2016 has begun! Day 1 is the best time to check out the games and that's exactly what I did. While most went for the mainstream ones, I decided to go check out some of the Indie games.

Many of the Indie Games can be found at the Games Solutions Centre booth and Founders Base.

The following are just some of the games I checked out:

Chasing Wild by Eutragon

Chasing Wild is a racing sort of game. You play as an animal in the animal kingdom and you race against against other players. The game can support up to four players competing at one time. What's unique about it are the game mechanics. How fast you move is based on how fast you can tap the sequence of arrows shown. It's similar to those music beat games but instead of matching the beat, you move your character. The arrows are located on the main screen itself as you can see in the following pic. After successfully tapping the pattern, you then tap the green bar to get a speed boost. Failure to key in the correct sequence and you have re-key the sequence from the start. It may seem like a simple game but trust me it's not. Several times I keyed in the wrong sequence. And needless to say I lost most of the rounds I played in.

The game is in the pre-Alpha phase and I was told that additional features will be added, such as the ability to sabotage other players.

Dusty Raging Fist by PD Design Studio Pte Ltd

Dusty Raging Fist is one of the most fun games I tried out. It is a 2D side scrolling action game with a whole host of attacking abilities which you can perform. Aside from the basice jump, light and heavy attacks, there's also a range attack where you wield a pair of pistols, elemental attacks (lightning and ice for example) which you have to collect and also summon a powerful guardian to assist. Not enough? Well you can call in the artillery when things get really hot, as well as a sniper to help you take out some pesky enemies. The games may be played with two other players and you can even perform combos together!

The game will be available for PC, PS4 and Xbox. Look out for it!

If you're wondering about this cool custom arcade cabinet, it's not for sale.

Toriko by Happy Labs

Toriko, not to be confused with a certain Gourmet Hunter is a puzzle/PVP type of game. Think Puzzle Bobble and the like. You need to clear your board of cute little critters as fast as possible and not let them touch the bottom or else you'll lose. The little critters are actually called Toriko. You'll need to match at least three Toriko of the same kind to clear them. You do that by first pulling down a character and then flicking it back up to form your triplet. You can pull down more than one Toriko of the same kind before flicking it back up. The faster you clear, the faster your opponent's board fills up. If you think you're in danger of losing, you can use the lightning or the orb to help clear your board. You can use them only once them though. There are also devices, seen at the right side in the above pic to trip up your opponent. The game is fast paced and exciting. I played against Jiahui who is the Marketing Manager and got creamed... guess I shouldn't have launched all those "sabo" devices at her. Lol. The game will be released in the first quarter of next year and will be available on iOS and Android.

Stellar Stars by WHITESPONGE

Stellar Stars is described as a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena type game. As it suggests you can challenge your friends or play in online leagues. The objective is to capture the Star which usually appears in the centre of the screen. You need time to capture it without interruption hence you'll need to first incapacitate your opponent first. You do that by attacking him until he has no health. Your opponent can recover in time to interrupt you and you need some luck in order to capture the Star. I found when I played that I regularly lost because I couldn't jump on the platforms in time. So I think the best place to kill off your opponent is on the lowest level. The basic attack is not limited to one direction. You can shoot up, down when jumping, left and right. You can also use several abilities in game which you can select before the game starts. Neutral minions spawn in the game as well and they drop spells which you can use against your opponent. The game will be released on STEAM next month.

Recolor by Diceroll Studios

Recolor is a 2D puzzle action game. You play as Huey and Satura, the main protagonists who do not know who they are. The characters look so cute! Guide them in their journey and help them remember. To play you draw a path for them to clear each level. Levels start out black and white and become coloured as they move. It kinda represents them slowly recovering their memory which is a nice touch. The game is not as simple as it sounds. Throw in obstacles and restrictions, such as the two characters' path cannot cross each other and you're in for a challenge. Planning is required and also timing. Recolor will be released for iOS first in December and Android to follow soon after.

Lunar Eclipse by Kaiju Den

If horror is your thing then you'll definitely want to try out Lunar Eclipse. It is a VR game which incorporates Chinese horror. Why Chinese horror? Kaiju Den Co-Founder Aaron Lin explains that this particular type is untapped and has not been done before. His team gets inspiration from old Hong Kong movies and you feel that right in the first episode. You start in a haunted Chinese mansion and you have to find your way out. The game is very immersive. The moon lit lighting, the rain and sounds can send chills up your body. Me, I was feeling annoyed at having to do actual walking and turning on the spot just to move around. Lol.  I won't say what you'll encounter. That's for you to find out. Only a teaser demo is available currently. The team will be launching a Kickstarter campaign soon to produce further episodes. Do give it a try.

Curious Hungry Monkeys and Pancake Boss Tower by Polywick Studio

The games I've talked about so far might not be suitable for younger players but these two certainly are. In Curious Hungry Monkeys you play as a monkey and try to eat the good bananas while avoiding the bad ones. Simple right. Collect coins to unlock costumes and companions who can aid you to collect more bananas.

In Pancake Boss Tower you try and stack your pancakes as high as you can. Guide them out of the pan as best you can and don't let your tower fall.

Both games are now available on Google Play.

I spoke with Sally who is the Technical Director and she mentioned that the studio also does Arts Outsourcing Services. Follow the link for the list of services.

That's all for now. Do check out the above and more at GameStart 2016. Thanks for viewing!

GameStart 2016 Recap

The third edition of GameStart has concluded, bringing an end to three days of fun and exciting gaming activities. The event continues to draw the crowds and the halls were packed as attendees got to try out some of the new and upcoming games, as well as witness some pulsating Esports action. And with several new activities to participate in there was even more reason to attend.

The weekend is when it is most crowded and it was reported that some stayed overnight to be first in line to check out the latest offerings.

Xbox made their debut at the event this year, bringing with them several new upcoming titles such as Gears of War 4 and Final Fantasy XV.

Gears of War 4 had a dedicated room where you could try out the game in comfort, and on large screen monitors to boot.

The game's popularity is evident from the line that formed outside the booth but you did not have to wait too long as there were sixteen stations where you could try the game.

To the Hanzo group in queue, you asked for the photo so here it is. Hope you guys had fun!

The game which interest me the most was NBA 2k17. To be honest I have not followed the NBA since during the days of Michael Jordan back in the 90s, much less played any basketball titles. I found myself liking this a lot and played at least half of a game. The controls were simple enough and I could match the AI almost point for point. I love that I was able to do some various shots! I had trouble on defence though, I could not seem to get any rebounds, block or intercept passes. I did manage to foul the opponent a couple of times though... The graphics looked great and the game ran smoothly. The cut scenes of the players, crowd and announcers are nice but I skipped ahead whenever I could. I just want to get on with the game!

Over to the Bandai Namco booth which had shrunk quite a bit since last year. There were at most two stations for each of their featured titles which include Tales of Berseria, Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization and Tekken 7 which will see Miguel make his return to the roster. Tomb Raider VR was also available for try. I had wanted to check it out but it was always occupied on the several occasions I passed by and in the end I totally forgot about it...

The game which left an impression for me was Little Nightmares. Now that game is creepy. You play as a tiny character and you have to try and find your way out of the ship you are in. In the demo you had to sneak around the kitchen and avoid the attentions of one large and ugly, monstrous looking chef. You have to do so carefully and quietly. One wrong move and you may cause the objects to topple and which will give up your position. And you definitely do not want to end up as the main course!

PlayStation was back too but mainly in a sponsor and hosting capacity for the Southeast Asia Major 2016 (SEAM 2016) which was held at GameStart for the first time. The event saw several top players from around the world compete including the likes of Momochi, Infiltration and Xian. With regards to the Street Fighter V the winner was Tokido using Ryu who pulled off a Shinku Hadoken right at the death to take the match against Momochi!

And here is the winner of the Street Fighter Asia Amateur Tournament. I cannot recall his name but I believe he is from Japan.

Now I know they already have their hands full with the tournaments but I have to say I am disappointed PlayStation had no trial and showcase booth. Off the top of my head I would have liked to check out Gravity Rush 2 and Star Trek: Bridge Crew.

Sticking with Esports another hot tournament to catch was the Overwatch Champions Singapore which was won by Avalon.

One positive of less mainstream games being showcased I guess is that more folks will check out the various Indie Games. I have already touched on some of the games here.

I like to bring up another game which caught the eye and that is Mr Catt by 7Quark, a Taiwan based company. Mr Catt is a puzzle type game and you take the role of the black cat who goes in search of his friend, the white cat who has gone missing. The objective of the game is to clear the blocks with the stars on each level. To do that you have to match three or more blocks of the same colour.

You have to use the blocks given at the bottom of the screen. The blocks do not immediately disappear. You can place your blocks on the board first and then activate them when you want to clear them and get combos. Forming more blocks of the same colour together can activate some special blocks to help you such as lightning and rainbow blocks. There is a limited number of moves for each level so some planning is required to make full use of your given blocks. I tried out some of the later levels and it was challenging. And I'm only talking about level 20... I scrolled through the tab at the booth and noticed there are over 200 levels!

The game is already available on Android. I'm not too sure about iOS. I will be getting it for sure.

Kinetiquettes unveiled their fully painted statue of Alyse (GameStart mascot) 3.0 and she looks gorgeous. The statue was digitally sculpted and then 3D printed. All in all it took the Kinetiquettes teams around 6 months to produce. The statue was up for pre-order at the event but production would only proceed if a certain number was hit.

Not seen in initial pics is Alyse mask accessory. She's looking badass.

Also unveiled by Kinetiquettes is the statue of Daigo "The Beast" Umehara. We have seen the concept before but this is the first time we are seeing the statue in person. For me anyway. Daigo is part of The Beast Unleashed diorama which also features the statues of Ryu and Evil Ryu.

Various panels and programmes were held on stage. I just caught a couple of the segments. One of the most popular ones was the Touken Ranbu - Online showcase where Executive Producer Yuta Hanazawa talked about the game and met the fans. He brought along some exclusive miniature swords from Japan where attendees would get the one they forged in the game on stage.

Yuta Hanazawa (cente)

There were two special music performances. I only managed to catch a portion by guitarist Az Samad from Malaysia. His playlist include the theme from Final Fantasy and The Legend of Zelda. Az is a gamer himself and he would talk about the game first before he played the piece. His playing was beautiful and very smooth.

I picked a bad spot for the Game On! Cosplay Runway. And if that was not bad enough people kept creeping up in front of me. I didn't want to kick up a fuss about it so I just let it be. I was already blocked by the speakers and monitors anyway. The competition saw a number of game-based costumes as it should be considering the event. Most of the characters were from Touken Ranbu and Overwatch.

I think we were spoilt last year. I can't help but feel this year's event was a bit scaled down. There were less big name studio booths. PlayStation not showcasing and the smaller sized Bandai Namco booth were certainly felt. There was a big focus on Esports which is fine. The matches were exciting but there's only so much one can watch in one sitting. I don't know if it's asking for too much but it is preferable to have both Esports and game showcase, not sacrificing one for the other. The amateur Street Fighter tournament is a good for those who want to get some competitive action. I was happy with what the Indies had to offer. Probably it's because I play more mobile games nowadays than console. I also liked the Retro DNA (which has been a staple of GameStart) and the NAJ Arcade booths which offered free play time for some classic games.

I'm going to end off for now and will probably add more to the post at a later time. I know I left out a few segments... I leave you with some additional pics.

Galleries will be added at a later time. Thanks for viewing!

Star Wars Black Series 6" Imperial Death Trooper

Here's a look at the Star Wars The Black Series 6" Death Trooper. It's a tough figure to find currently but I think it will be easier to get in the coming months. I got lucky and snagged one back during Rogue Friday.

It says on the back of the package the Imperial Death Troopers are elite soldiers of Imperial Intelligence. Okay but can they hit anything? Lol. I'm guessing they can. We just have to wait and see in the movie. The Death Trooper wears full black armour which is of a different design compared to the regular Stormtrooper. The helmet for instance is more narrow and longish looking and has a targeting scope of some sort attached on the left side. There's a strip coming down the middle of his helmet as well. I like that some dark metallic paint was applied. It helps bring out the detail. Hold the figure up to the light and you'll notice the lens of the helmet were painted with a dark metallic green. Nice! The Death Trooper is taller and slimmer than the Stormtrooper. His height along with the black armour certainly make him more imposing. There's nice detail on the body. I especially like the sculpted ribbed interior suit worn underneath the armour. The shoulder straps too were sculpted and are more visible thanks to some gun metal paint apps. The pouches on his belt are big and you wonder what he carries in them.

Accessories. He comes with a blaster rifle and a blaster pistol. Both have nice sculpted detail. Only the rifle has that little bit of red paint detail.

There's a cup holder.... I mean loop dangling on his right side of his belt. That's where he can store his blaster pistol like as seen in the trailer. You can also store the blaster rifle there if you want.

Articulation. He's got a ball hinge neck, ball hinge shoulders, swivel hinge elbows, swivel hinge wrists, ball joint torso, ball hips, thigh swivel, double jointed knees and ankle hinge and pivot. He can look down well, up not so much. The shoulder armour are soft and flexible and it allows better shoulder hinge articulation. The pouches too are flexible and he can raise his legs at least 90 degrees.

Comparison shots.

Great figure! Look forward to seeing what they can do in the movie. Thanks for viewing!

Mafex Batman v Superman Armored Batman

Here's a look at the Mafex Batman v Superman Armored Batman.

This is a another great looking figure from Mafex. There's lots of great sculpted detail on Batman's armor. It is battle damaged. There are numerous scrapes, scratches, knocks and dents on the plated areas, while the suit underneath is textured. Simply awesome detail all round! I like the gun metal color of the armor and it has a black wash on it giving it that worn and tarnished look. The strap across his chest is a separate piece and it actually runs through a hole in his cape, so that the cape remains "functional" and not pinned down. Nice! The belt too is a separate piece. The front of it, that is the pouches was painted with a light gold while the strap at the back was painted with a gun metal tone. I think they did a good job with the head sculpt. That mouth. There's a good likeness to how he appeared on screen. And he does have a 5 o'clock shadow which you may not be able to see in the pics. One issue I have is with the cape. It has a denim style pattern on it which looks off when seen in light. It also doesn't help that the cape on my figure was heavily folded and creased. Yes I know with different lighting I can make it look all black but still.

Also, the inside of the cape is of a light grey tone. I would have preferred it to be at least the same tone as the outside or better yet, all black in colour. On the positive side of things there are wires sewn into the sides of the cape so we can pose it. I also like that it is quite large in size as you'll see in a later pic.

Accessories. He comes with an additional pair of fists, a pair of open hands and a grapple gun. I love the sculpted detail on the grapple gun. It has great paint apps too.

He also comes with a base and stand.

Articulation. He's got a dumbbell joint neck, dumbbell joint lower neck, ball hinge shoulders, bicep swivel, double jointed elbows, revolver joint wrists, ball joint torso, ball joint waist, ball joint hips on a hinge, thigh swivel, double jointed knees, revolver joint ankles and there's some ankle pivot. He can look down well and up just decently. The shoulder pads are flexible and allows arm articulation.

You can use the grenade launcher from the default Batman with this version as well.

Comparison shots.

Great figure! Thanks for viewing!

Thundercats Lion-O (Mattel)

Thunder! Thunder! Thunder! Thundercats! Hooooooo!!! Here's a look at the recently released Lion-O figure from Mattel.

Lion-O is the first regular release figure in the line and he comes packed in a black mailer box which features the Thundercats logo in front and an image of Lion-O and the Cats Lair on the sides.

The main packaging is a box type packaging. I like that its sides are straight as it makes storing them easier unlike the MOTUC 2.0. I'm loving the graphics printed on the front and back. They are so colourful and attractive and they really draw you in. One thing I don't like about it is the blade of the sword smack right in the middle of the front. I get that it completes the picture of the Sword of Omens but it messes up the view of the figure somewhat. I would be happier with a smooth clear bubble.

The Thundercats have returned! Finally! I was quite disappointed when Bandai did not release more classic figures than they did. But I think things turned out for the better. If Lion-O is anything to go by, this line is going to be great!

Lion-O looks fantastic! He's got a great head sculpt. The likeness is spot on. The paint apps are superb. The eyes and eyebrows were painted very well. I think they did a great job with the hair. I like the "flowy" shape of it and it has great detail. On top of that, its even got some black shading in it. Very nice! He looks very good in action poses. The body looks similar to that of a MOTUC figure. The arms and upper legs are definitely reused. The torso has been tweaked. They sculpted in the the connecting straps at the top of his tunic and also the raised seams at the edges. The belt and trunks is an overlay vinyl piece and is flexible so as to allow some leg articulation. The belt portion has a bit of texture to it. The Thundercats logo was well done and I like that they used gloss paint for it. Speaking of paint, I love the colours used on Lion-O. I think they got the skin tone right and I love the vibrant blue and orangey red of his hair.

Note that I have swapped in a left gripping hand in the pics above.

Accessories. He comes with two claw shields, one with a strap and the handle of the Sword of Omens sculpted in, an extra left gripping hand, the Sword of Omens in dagger form and the Sword of Omens when fully extended. Both the swords have nice sculpted detail, notably on the handle and guard. The paint apps for the "Eye" and logo are great and I like that they put in some metallic aqua at the guard. Very nice! Both blades are quite rigid and should not warp easily unless poorly kept.

The claw shields have great sculpted detail. I love the fur like texture. The studs on the "knuckles" were well painted. To equip it you remove his hand first and then swap the claw shield in. The claw shield with the sword can be pegged to his waist. I like how they shaped the claw shield to the contour of his thigh and so that it rests against it nicely and it does not stick out as much.

"Sword of Omens, give me Sight Beyond Sight!".

Articulation. He's got a ball joint neck, ball hinge shoulders, bicep swivel, elbow hinge, swivel hinge wrists, ab crunch, waist rotation, peg hinge hips, thigh swivel, knee hinge, calf swivel and ankle hinge and pivot. He can look up and down just a bit. There's hardly any forward bend at the ab crunch, he can arch back quite a bit though. He cannot lift his legs up much as I would have liked.

Comparison shots. The Bandai version has a more animated look thanks to the bright and shiny colours. It is however too tall to fit in with other lines. I've always wanted to have characters of MOTU and Thundercats go up against one another and now we can thanks to the two lines being made similarly.

Great figure! This is probably the best Lion-O figure with have gotten yet! Thanks for viewing!

SDCC Exclusive Mattel Thundercats Wilykit & Wilykat

I've had this pair for awhile now. A review is long overdue. Here's a look at the SDCC exclusive Mattel Thundercats Wilykit & Wilykat.

The cardboard insert opens up into a diorama of the Cats Lair. I really like the printed image. I would have liked if it were bigger. I wonder if Matty will do a Cats Lair playset.

Wilykit is the younger sibling of the pair. She is the adventurous sort and rather playful, which is the impression you get from the cheeky expression on her face. She's got a great head sculpt and has a good likeness. The paint apps for her eyes and eyebrows are great. Gloss paint was used for her eyes and it catches the light very well. You may notice a double sparkle, inclusive of the painted kind in her eyes in the pics. I feel the white on her face is a little too thick. Her hair was well done and has good detail. The black streak was painted okay. There are a couple of black splotches on my figure though to my annoyance. I do like that there's some shading in her hair. She wears a pink and blue dress. There's some nice wrinkle detail on it. The circular portion of the logo was sculpted and the cat image was well painted. The lower portion of her dress is flexible and does allow for some leg articulation.

Wilykat looks just as good and has a good likeness. Again the head sculpt here is great. The overall look is let down by some poorly painted eyes. His right eye is looking to his right and his left eye is looking left. It makes him look awkward. A good thing is its not too noticeable from a distance. The hair was well done and I like that its got some shading in it. The white area was not properly painted and you can see the flesh coloured base underneath. He wears a tunic. They made one very noticeable error and that is the colour of his right sleeve which is supposed to be brown. The light brown trimming was sculpted and there's nice wrinkle detail on his attire. The bracers on his wrists too were sculpted as were his boots. The belt is part of the "skirt" portion overlay. The paint apps for the Thundercats logo is good.

Accessories. Wilykit comes with an extra pair of interchangeable gripping hands, her lasso, a coiled lasso and her blue Spaceboard (pictured upper half of the following image). Wilykat comes with an extra pair of relaxed grip hands, a left hand with sculpted coloured pellets with smoke emanating from them,  a whip, a coiled up whip and his Spaceboard (the one with light brown edges). There are also two stands included to be used with the Spaceboards. I would have liked if they included some coloured pellets. The pair often used them in the show.

You probably would have noticed holes on the back of the figures. That's where you can have them carry their coiled weapons.

To attach the Spaceboard to the stand simply slide in the elongated section into the slot and peg it in. The Spaceboard is pretty secure on the stand.

A great thing about the stand is that it has a ball joint and you can have the pair flying at various angles. Unfortunately we cannot position the Spaceboard leaning to one side as the stand will fall over. Do be careful when turning the joint as it is quite stiff and feels like its going to break at times.

Both Thunderkittens have the same articulation. They have a ball joint neck, ball hinge shoulders, swivel hinge elbows, wrist swivel, waist rotation, peg hinge hips, swivel hinge knees and ankle hinge and pivot. Both can look up and down just a bit. There's not much bend at the elbows and knees. They also cannot raise their legs up much due to the lower portion of their attire.

Just one comparison shot.

Both look great and are nice figures. I wish the range of articulation was better and I would have liked if they had one or two more accessories. Thanks for viewing!

DOCTOR STRANGE Movie Review

"You wonder what I see in your future?". That's easy! I foresee you watching Dr Strange at the first opportunity. There has never been a Marvel movie quite like this one and you certainly don't want to miss it! I highly recommend catching it in 3D. The visuals are stunning and it is definitely worth the price of the ticket. Read on if you would like to know more.

It's always a joy for me to see a comic character come alive on the big screen and it's no different with Dr Strange. The experience was much better in fact. I was thrilled and excited. As not only are we introduced to a powerful new character but we also get a look at the mystical side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). We finally get a glimpse of various realities, dimensions and realms. And are introduced to the concepts of astral projection and portals. This opens up lots of possibilities! Will we be seeing Shuma-Gorath? How about Mephisto? Or can there be a gateway for the Fantastic Four and X-men to make their appearance? And... Sorry I was getting ahead of myself there. Dr Strange is only just hitting and here I am already playing out scenarios in my head.

Now let's see... The movie is very much an origin story. When we first see Dr Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) he's a brash, cocky, arrogant and egotistical doctor who only cares for his fame and career. His world suddenly comes crashing down after a horrific accident robs him of the use of his hands. His hands are the most important tools to him as without them he can no longer perform any operations. After exhausting all known and experimental procedures his desperate search for a cure leads him to Kamar-Taj, a mysterious place in Nepal. There he finds Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), practitioners of the mystic arts which could help him. Though initially sceptical he quickly acquires magical abilities. He inevitably gets drawn in the battle against dark forces who are hell bent on conquering Earth.

There's a good deal of character development. A lot of credit has to go to Benedict Cumberbatch who really brings out the character. It is no wonder Marvel held out as long as they did to get their man. He just has that certain charm. He gets to be funny too which we don't often see in his roles. He gets in several quips throughout the movie and I especially like the exchanges between him and Wong (Benedict Wong). I also got a chuckle out of his constant insistence of being called Doctor which reminds me of a certain pirate.

Much has been made of Tilda Swinton being cast as The Anicient One, a role which is originally an old Asian man in the comics. I didn't mind her one bit and felt she fits right in to the overall picture. She actually brings a unique presence to the character and boy does she kick some ass in the movie. Chiwetel Ejiofor gives a strong performance as Mordo. He's a different take than what we are used to in the comics and it's because of that you just can't help but feels he's being set up for future developments. I have yet to mention Rachel McAdams who plays Christine Palmer, a fellow surgeon of Dr Strange. Her role is a little limited. But she does help flesh out the kind of person the good doctor is and has an important part to play in one scene.

Kaecilius is the villain and he's played by Mads Mikkelsen. Marvel movie villains tend to be lacking and underused but I think Kaecilius fares a bit better than some others. We do get a bit of his back story and I can see his motivation for doing what he does. He is also the hands on type, personally leading the attack on our heroes on several occasions. The action sequences are fun and exciting. Where magic is involved you not only have to worry about your opponent, but also your surroundings. You thought the Matrix was good, this takes it up a notch.  I feel the magic used in the film is sufficient. That said, I hope to see more varied forms of magic combat in his next outing. Familiar artefacts are also in play and I got a kick out of seeing the Eye of Agamotto and the Cloak of Levitation.

Like I mentioned before the visuals are stunning and the movie is best watched in 3D. We get a taste of what's to come right at the beginning of the movie. Buildings fold away and change configuration as if they were paper. The psychedelic trip through the many realms and dimensions is amazing. With battles fought across the globe as well as on the Astral Plane and in the Mirror Dimension, get ready for a visual treat.

Dr Strange is a great movie! I thoroughly enjoyed it. The cast is exceptional. The visuals and the action are great. Do stay behind after the show as they are two end credit scenes.

Dr Strange opens 27 October 2016 locally. Be sure to catch it and get acquainted with the MCU's newest hero!

GnB Comics Halloween ComicFest 2016

Happy Halloween! So how was your day? Good I hope. Mine was fun but exhausting. There were a number of events being held on the same day and I went around visiting a couple of them. My first stop was GnB Comics which was participating in the Halloween ComicFest 2016.

Firstly I like to mention that GnB Comics has moved and their new store is at Block 809 French Road, Kitchener Complex Unit #02-38. They have picked a great location. The place is near Lavender MRT, has many eateries in the area and the best part is the store is located inside a mall and we can queue in air conditioned comfort! Lol!

The store looks great! I have visited the new store on a couple of occasions but it was not quite ready yet. This was the first time I was seeing it fully stocked. Wow! I love the display window! The racks and racks of comics and their shelves of statues and figures are very attractive.

Check out the interior. It's large, bright and spacious. It has a more accommodating and welcoming feel than the previous store.

Here are the comics that were given out for the event. There were lots to choose from and it was hard to decide which 10 to pick. In addition character badges and Captain America: Civil War posters were also given out. Those who turned up in costume could win some store vouchers and prizes. Graphic novels were available at US$1 to SG$1. A great deal which I took advantage of!

Marvel's C.B.Cebulski made a surprise appearance. He happened to be in town and dropped in for a visit. I had a great picture taken with him. No I'm not going to show it you. I'm shy... I'll just say he got through to my thick skull.

C.B. Celbulski (second from left)

More photos now. The store is so spacious that there's even a Tatami Room which was brought in from Japan! I checked with the boss and the room is available for cosplay and even wedding photo shoots. You do need to call ahead first if you're planning a shoot. Do check with them on any charges, rules and regulations. They are in the process of drawing that up. You can make enquires via the GnB Comics Facebook page

Toys! If you need Marvel Select or DC Collectibles items GnB Comics is a great place to check!

Yet more shelves of comics, TPBs and toys!

I had a great time at the Halloween Comics Fest! Thanks GnB for the comics!
